After I create a group set and then within it groups, how can those groups use the chat room feature - how can each group have its own chat room?
Hi Holly, Chat is not available for Groups, only for courses. Within their groups as another option they can collaborate using Google Suite (Google Docs, etc) or Microsoft Suite and then within the software they can chat.
The student should go to their group and click on collaborations
Then, they should click authorize and login to Google or Microsoft and then click on the + Collaboration.
I hope that gives you different options.
To add to the answer- chat is more of a live announcement feature than a standard chat room. It is a good way for students to ask a quick question of an instructor, or for an instructor to make an announcement. Chat doesn't have any private channels, every message sent goes to everyone.
Hi Holly Vettori
perhaps you could use discussions as a chat alternative?
Assign a discussion as a group discussion.
I guess it depends on what the purpose of the chat is. If an instructor just wants students to be able to talk to each other, they usually use Canvas messages to communicate or set up a different way. If an instructor wants to talk to students one-on-one, in a more "live" format than feedback on an assignment or email, he could probably do the same thing and set up something over email. Holly Vettori, I think part of the reason Canvas doesn't have a chatroom is because of the legal complexities surrounding instructor/student interaction. Instructors having "off the record" conversations with students without a school-accessible history is usually not a good idea.
Holly, each student group space has access to Conferences which they can use for their chats: How do I create a conference in a student group?
