I'd like to be able to SYNCH the calendars, not use import/export.  Is that possible?

Hi,  @hettk ‌! Welcome to the Canvas Community! This is a GREAT question! 

Google Calendar and Canvas do not have a two-way sync, unfortunately. The Canvas Calendar also does not intake from Google Calendar; the feed only goes one way by exporting the canvas calendar feed and then importing that feed into another calendar (such as Outlook, Google, iCal/Apple, etc). 

Here are the instructions for how to one-way sync the Canvas Calendar into Google Calendar: How do I subscribe to the Calendar feed using Google Calendar as a student? 

This seems to work well for my district, by the way! Our one complaint is that the Google Calendar title is not automatically set; it shows up as the text of the calendar feed URL (this is easily fixed). 

Also, to help you out a little further, Canvas has not updated their documentation above with the new Gsuite/Google Calendar user interface! Here are some screenshots in the new gCal look to help you add an external calendar from a URL link:
