Hi Everyone!

Is there anyway of restricting students from messaging one another on Canvas, but still allow the students to send messages to teachers?

 @rehanafw ​, under Admin --> Permissions you can moderate who can "Send messages to individual course members" - How do I set permissions for a course-level role in an account?

I'm not sure if that would mean just between students or if this would block the ability for students to message their instructor as well, so you'd want to do some checking in your test environment - How do I access the Canvas test environment? - to make sure it does what you want it to do!

I don't personally know of anybody doing this right now, but can only assume that some are out there.

My concern is that one of  the reasons (among many) that we chose Canvas was its great suite of communication tools, recognizing the importance of online students keeping connected and engaged, and feeling like they are part of a larger learning community. That being said, I also recognize that some students (thankfully a small number) can be harmful to the community they are a part of, and their ability to communicate might need to be restricted.

I will watch this discussion and see what others have to say.

We are giving the Canvas Admins area a little bit of love (especially questions that are really, really old) and just want to check in with you.  This will also bring this question new attention.
