There seems to be no way in Canvas to get a downloadable list of members in a group. Even for a moderately large class this is a serious difficulty. it is even difficult to compile the list manually since (a) the names are often truncated and (b) they are not alphabetical. is there any workaround to solve this?

@jeff_hughes , you are correct that there isn’t anything built into Canvas that allows you to do this. Yet, there is a way you can still do this using the following - https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-11862-download-and-create-report-of-course-group-sets-group...
Hope this helps!
I think there might be a built-in way to get this that I just learned about from a colleague this week. In the course, go to the people tool, then the group set tab you're interested. From there, click the import button, and on that page there will be a link to "Download Course Roster CSV " which will include your entire roster and which group in the particular group set they belong to. Is that what people here are looking for?

Thanks Kona- I had this exact same request again today where a faculty member has 100 groups in a course and wants to see the membership so he can assign specific readings. I agree with @RobDitto this should be standard functionality.
Thanks for this! It works a treat and really saves me time.
@jeff_hughes , while @kona pointed you toward @stelpstra 's terrific grassroots solution, I agree with you that our institution expects this type of report/export to be available in built-in Canvas functionality. When you can, please upvote these popular feature ideas:
I am sorry to say that the grassroot excel macro sheet doesn't work anymore (not getting half of the names). And others seems to know it, because the link from Konas post is dead also now.
So, is there another solution? I was really fond of this one.

Greetings! I tried finding the original document, but couldn't find it. 😞
Yet, I was able to find this page - https://kth.instructure.com/courses/11/pages/listing-group-information?module_item_id=10115
Hope it helps! Kona
Wait, this might be it!

Dear Chriscas.
Sorry for this superlate answer... 😑 Thanks for your suggestion. I found the buttons, but I can't get it to work. The download file has all the students in rows and three promising column headings:
| group_name | canvas_group_id | group_id |
- but unfortunately empty below the headings, even though the courses have groupsets, with groups and members. Does it work in your school? If it does I could go and ask our IT guys to look into the matter.
Nice weekend, Henrik
