Is anyone using the OneNote integration? If so, thoughts?

This is a great question rgibson1​.  I am sorry you have not gotten any replies yet.  I have not used the OneNote integration, but I'm hoping we can find people in the Community that have.  I am going to unmark this as a question so that it can continue as a discussion (A question implies there is a correct answer).  I am also going to share it with the Instructional Designers​ group to see if anyone hanging out there has any experience with OneNote!

We are using OneNote Integration but I don't believe it's functioning the way it was designed to right now.  We had a teacher who did a little bit of digging and I think it came back as a Microsoft issue, not a Canvas Issue.  We actually just had a teacher submit a help desk request in our in-house ticket system stating that OneNote isn't working. 

But the parts that were working, at least at one point, our teachers loved it without question!  That's what I had heard through the grapevine from teachers around our school.

I am sorry to here it is not working because I got excited when I saw Rob's post. This could be a useful integration and might soon provide a journaling solution for faculty who feel the current options for journaling are inadequate.  @mmcphail ​, do you know the nature of the problem with the integration? Just curious!

Firstly, when the OneNote app is enabled (we have it for all courses since we have it installed at the site level, some teachers don't have it on the list of view-able links for students), the "Class Notebook" link appears twice.  Either one that is clicked we are receiving an error that says: 

Service Unavailable

HTTP Error 500. Internal server error.

I'm fairly confident that we have everything set up properly.  Just to be safe to make sure that no one on our end is missing anything I submitted a case to Canvas just to verify whether or not this is a Microsoft or a Canvas issue.

Just wanted to post an update on this.  We were able to get OneNote to work just fine, but what we had to do was basically re-register on the OneNote support site and get a new consumer key and shared secret.  When I added it to our current OneNote app in Canvas it worked just fine.  The downside is that anyone who had notes in there from before are now gone. 

This isn't a great resolution for those that don't want to lose their notes but for those that aren't worried about that, this solution should work out for you.

Is anyone having trouble with your students NOT being added through the LMS? I have tried adding students automatically and manually.  The LMS is not generating the students and when I try manually, it keeps saying that the student isn't found.

Yes our district is! We are single sign on and are wondering if that is the issue? Any ideas?

Yes, we just discovered this also.  I have a librarian using this with about a dozen classes and none of them automatically added the students.  Anyone have a cause or a solution for this issue?  He doesn't want to resort to adding the students manually!

I am successfully using OneNote in my class.  I used Canvas to get them all in my class notebook.  What I am struggling with right now is how the assignment integration works.  I can use the add on in OneNote to create an assignment.  It defaults to a 100 point assignment with no submission.  I am not really sure how that works.  I have also tried going to Canvas and creating an assignment using the external tool for a submission and selected OneNote.  From my point of view, I only see that it takes the students directly into OneNote, but I can't find a place for the students to actually submit anything.  Ideally, my students should be able to complete their review in class tomorrow and I should be able to grade in speedgrader.  But I can't get that to work.  I evaluate in OneNote and post the grade in Canvas.  How do I get the assignment to show in speedgrader?  I am also frustrated in finding a step by step guide in Canvas guides for this. 

Any suggestions?

According to LTI and OneNote Support, it does not look like assignments are a supported function, which is sad.

Hold the phone! Watch the video on this page: OneNote Class Notebook​. Canvas is the example that they use in the video, and the  assignment creation and grading is done in OneNote (after you download a OneNote add in that Kelly refers to), which means ink annotation with a stylus. How did I not know about this? This is huge! Although, yeah, like Kelly, I am wondering if I can change the points the assignment is worth to something other than 100. After finals, I need to start testing with this.

From what I can figure out, students still can't "submit" anything through OneNote.  If I could get my students to submit lab report, AND if I could use a rubric (something ELSE that doesn't work with OneNote/Canvas) that would be great.

Sadly, I got frustrated with the OneNote integration, so I am leaving it alone for the time being. I am hoping they would smooth out the edges in a year or so. I'll give it another try next summer, maybe.

Hi all. I have been using One-Note to create assignments in Canvas. When it works it is fantastic. You have to use the Class Notebook to first connect to Canvas and then map to your class and students. Using the 2016 desktop version it works great on my own internet but not on our schools which is strange. I have recently had the app installed on my computer and I just get a white window when trying to make my canvas connection. 

Basically i get kids to upload their classwork / quiz to their folder, and it allows me to mark and grade/score them. Upon pressing submit, it then shoots it all up to Canvas. You cannot see the task on Canvas but just their scores/grades.

When it works it is great - but it is very temperamental unfortunately. And now I am using the app - it doesnt work at all

Nick, I agree with your observation, when it works it's great. On my computer I have been lucky and it is pretty seemless but trying to help a colleague and theirs was glitchy. The create assignment button kept disappearing when he clicked on it. I have a question you might be able to answer. When the assignment is pushed to Canvas, it turns up under the assignment section with the title but there is no hyperlink - they can't get back to the assignment page in OneNote unless they leave Canvas and open OneNote and find the page. Is that how its suppose to work? It would be great if it hyperlinked directly to the assignment page in the student section.

Our district is new to Office 365 and any integrations we support via Canvas will be optional for the foreseeable future. My excellent colleague,  @slansfor , is working to develop a OneNote Class Notebook course for teachers and we are hoping someone might confirm what we assume to be true . . .

Rather than confuse our existing Canvas users with no knowledge or skill related to OneNote Class Notebooks, we're going to recommend that the LTI installation occur at the course-level (not at the account level) for those that want to try it out. Each teacher that wants to enable the LTI tool in their Canvas course(s) needs to obtain their own Secret and Key, correct? (In other words, we can't provide them all with the same key and secret so that they can bypass the generation steps prompted at this site, right?)

Hi Stephen,

We are going to be adding the OneNote Class Notebook by the course and it looks to me like you will get an error message if you try to add the same key and secret to each course. That would confirm that you need each teacher to get their own unique key and secret. 

I am editing my response, because I was wrong.....You can add the same key and secret to multiple courses, without an issue. Or follow Matt's suggestion and add it at the course level, but install it as an xml with the code he shared below that disables the tool in the course navigation by default.

I just installed it at the account level with the key and secret and edited the XML file to hide OneNote by default from the user navigation. That way the teachers that want to use it just have to enable it in the Settings > Navigation screen.

I didn't have a copy of whatever it is that I actually used but this should work for you. I just added that line that says the default for course navigation is that it is disabled. You can also change the name for the course navigation item so it says OneNote instead of Class Notebook if you want.

I love the integration of OneNote with Canvas. It is a fantastic combination of powerful tools. My big holdup with a full roll out with my teachers is I'm struggling to make it work with courses with multiple sections. I haven't found a way around having one notebook with 150 students in it. It will only allow the creation of a notebook for the main course, not individual sections of a course. Example: a Math teacher teaches the same course 4 times. I don't know if our courses are added incorrectly from our SIS. Has anyone experienced this?

I have the same issue - it appears that you can only integrate a Class Notebook with a Course, not a specific Section, unless you break the integration.

The alternative would be for the teacher to have 4 separate courses, each with one section.

I've used OneNote Class Notebook for a couple of years and love it. We are transitioning to Canvas for this school year and I am wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to having multiple sections with the same name. I tried multiple ways to link the two accounts and separate the sections but haven't had any luck. Thanks.
