Is it possible to have students use a rubric for self-evaluation? I would like to create a rubric and assign it to students to fill in to evaluate their own progress. I haven't been able to find anything that covers this topic in the Canvas guides.
Thank you!

There isn't anything that I am aware of within the Canvas GUI which allows for a self-evaluation using a rubric. There are peer reviews where Student A peer reviews work submitted by Student B (see How do I submit a peer review to an Assignment?), but this doesn't sound like it's what you want. You might want to consider creating a fillable Word document or PDF file to attach along with the assignment which your students would have to first download, fill out, and then re-attach to the assignment for you. Another option would be to create some kind of Google Docs form that you could embed into the assignment of the course. You create the questions you wanted to ask in the self-evaluation, and then students would fill out the form as part of the submission process.
Hope this helps.
Can a person do a peer review on themselves? I was looking for something similar.
Stephanie
Hi @swilson34 ...
If you are asking about the possibility of someone doing a peer review on him/herself using something built-in to Canvas...again, I am no aware of anything that currently would let you do this. Please refer to what I suggested to Lauren above. If this doesn't meet your needs, I think my next suggestion would be to create a new Feature Idea (Canvas Feature Ideas) so that people have the opportunity to add their own feedback and vote on it in the next voting period. Here are some Canvas Guides on the voting process here in the Canvas Community:
How do I create a new feature idea?
How does the voting process work for feature ideas?
What is the feature development process for Canvas?
Hope this helps, Stephanie.
@swilson34 , to add to what Chris provided, here are two previous feature ideas related to what you were wanting:
Both of these ideas were archived due to not enough votes, but if you'd like to revive the idea, you are welcome to! In a case like this would want to include why this feature would be important to have in Canvas - How to write a good feature idea submission - and also include the links to the previous ideas.
Hope this helps!
Kona,
Thanks, I will revive the idea. It sounds like it has some interest if we can just phrase it right.
I posted a comment in the original idea in response to the mention that now work would be done on rubrics for next 6 months (posted in March) . With 230 votes, I don't think this idea is going to go away and is most definitely something asked for by a wide section of the community. Would be nice to get a further update!
Words cannot express just how much we (still) need this feature. Our students are supposed to self-evaluate on every single clinical assignment (about 75 assignments over 2 years) and the double work of having to build the rubrics for faculty to use, plus some kind of writable document for students to submit, is daunting. Especially when the peer reviews use rubrics so handily now! If only the student could be assigned to "peer review herself"!
Hey, @emily ! Have you considered using a quiz or practice quiz for self evaluation? A multiple choice question could simulate a rubric, and the bonus is you get the analytics from the quiz, which you wouldn't get from a rubric. Do you think that will work?
With the new quiz analytics, it might be a good work around. I'll have to play with it.
This was not an acceptable option last time we looked at it. I haven't tried it with the new quiz analytics.
Hi, Emily! What was lacking the last time you considered quizzes for self evaluation?
Every time I suggest a self-evaluation feature, people go to great length to convince me that using a quiz would be a fine workaround, and it's really just NOT. If it were an acceptable workaround, I doubt 235+ people would have upvoted this feature, repeatedly. Hopefully Canvas will hear these pleas and implement this feature soon.
Perhaps there could just be a response/update to the original request?

As I have mentioned in the request, self assessment needs to sit with peer and teacher assessment as part of a collection. Using the same rubric for each one of the groups is surely the best way forward and the one that would have the greater impact. The next step could even be to allow weighted marking for each of the groups to contribute to the final assessment 'grade'.
