how do you mark a quiz if the answers are essay style? All I get is an excel spreadsheet that is not especially user friendly when all answers are short or long answers?

Hi  @kym_purdy  and welcome to the Community!  The easiest way to grade essay and short answer questions in Canvas is using the SpeedGrader.  The document describes using the SpeedGrader for quiz questions, How do I grade quiz questions in SpeedGrader? 

Have you used SpeedGrader before?  If not I highly suggest using this for whatever assessment you can.  I love the functionality for regular assignments and discussions, in addition to quizzes.

Yes many thanks I did sort this, however I made my quiz initially just inn quizzes and now realise that I have to put it into assignments in order to use speed grader.

Hello again  @kym_purdy .  I’m glad that helped!  You should be able to grade your essay questions in Speedgrader without having them in as an assignment instead of quiz.  Speedgrader works well in quizzes too!

This is helpful - can you also indicate how to get to speedgrader from the quiz? It's not showing as an option for me on the quiz page, and I can't see another way to get there.

The Guide that @ericwerth had provided in his above response, How do I grade quiz questions in SpeedGrader? - Instructure Community, shows you how to get to the SpeedGrader from a quiz (if you are using the current Classic Quizzes interface).  If you are not seeing the SpeedGrader button for your quiz, you may need to check with your school's local Canvas administrator to do some troubleshooting on this...as we here in the Community don't have access to your school's Canvas environment.  Or, you want to reach out to Canvas Support, and they might be able to log into your course to see if they can find anything that would be out of sorts.  How do I contact Canvas Support? - Instructure Community
