Canvas FastTrack Ep. 17 - Bite Sized Content Pages

The Canvas FastTrack Video series is a collection of quick videos aligning Canvas with Dr. Puentedura’s SAMR Model of Technology Integration.  This model has been used by many institutions as a framework for infusing technology into teaching and learning activities.  In the video collection we will dive into the various tools in Canvas and how they align with the SAMR Model of Technology.  Watch this four-minute video introduction to SAMR if you aren’t already familiar with the model.

Episode 17 is a 2 1/2 minute video about Chunking Content on Content Pages; at the Augmentation level of Technology integration providing accessible content for students is key.  Deciding what is the most important content and delivering it to student in a bite sized format is an excellent practice for both Best Practices of Pedagogical deliver and Instructional design.  Keep your content short and sweet, even sneak a quick checkpoint formative assessment in!

 @lstark ‌, I have never really given much thought about using the mobile app for my students.  This video is great for showing how to set up content with the mobile learner in mind.  Thanks again for these videos!

Content Pages superior to Text Headers

The current state of text headers at my institution: When students navigate through module content items in the intended order using the next button, text headers completely disappear from view! Jump, skip, nothing! 

That's right. Text headers that are visible in the Modules list view, disappear when students are actually navigating content. Are teachers even aware of this bug? (https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/7944?sr=search&searchId=f8ca3b3e-e05c-4262-9792-6549add1384e&s...)

The UX intention behind programming these disappearing headers is a mystery. (When is it ideal to have content disappear? If it important enough to include, it is probably important enough to see.)

Solution: Until this is fixed, opt for Content pages with no content.  That's right, use Content pages with a title line only and nothing in the rich content editor when you would otherwise want only a text header in Modules.
