The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Does anyone know if there are plans to eliminate Classic Quizzes and move solely to New Quizzes?
We have a lot of faculty who have done HTML coding to "beautify" their Canvas Classic Quizzes and they don't want to lose that or put forth more effort if they will be eliminated.

I was curious about this too and after some digging, I was able to find this: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/New-Quizzes-Users/New-Quizzes-Timeline-Overview/ta-p/243647
It looks like as of the July 2021 date, Classic Quizzes can no longer be created nor can students submit Classic Quizzes. Hope this helps!
Thank you for the information. We have about 90% of our faculty using Classic Quizzes. I would hate to lose that ability in less than a year.
The July 2021 date is only the enforcement of new quizzes as part of the Canvas interface. Currently, it is a course level feature option. After the July 2021 update, it will no longer be course level feature option. You will still have access to classic quizzes and all its functionality. Instructors can choose which quiz tool to use.
We have been working out how to migrate our quizes from Classic to New. While a quiz can easily be migrated (though I do not know for sure what features may be lost in the process), the problem comes in when you have quizzes created from question banks.
Currently it looks like our best option for migration is to create quizzes in Classic for each bank that we have using the "Add Questions" feature so that all the questions have been added. Then we export a copy of this quiz from Canvas. We then import the quizzes into New Quizzes as an Item Bank and recreate the quizzes from there. It is a lot of hoops to jump through, but at least we won't lose the ability to use the questions that we already have.
The timeline has changed. The link you shared has this update. We have more time!!
UPDATE: 2020-07-09
Based on current educational challenges from COVID-19, the December 2020 enforcement date for New Quizzes has been postponed until July 2021. All existing timelines will be updated at a later date.
Hi everyone,
I have a lot of test questions at stake so it is really important that I don't mess this up. I want to make double sure that the following is correct: We will no longer be able to assign classic quizzes after July 2021. But we WILL be able to migrate questions from classic quizzes to new quizzes until July of 2022, correct? Do I have that right? (Currently when I migrate quizzes from classic to new quizzes, I lose the pictures. I will have to cut and paste them from the individual classic quiz question to the new quiz question. I want to make sure that I will be able to continue to do that through July 2022. Without the pictures, the questions are pretty much worthless.) Thank you.
