Hi,
I am struggling with Mastery Paths. I have set up a simple mastery path with three different paths.
When I test the paths using the test student, I get a message that says "Locked until the assignment is graded" even though the assignment is graded.
I have two demo students in the course as well. I have submitted an assignment for both demo students and graded them. For both demo students, I get a message that says "Locked until mastery path is processed for the assignment."
I have refreshed the page multiple times to no avail.
I have deleted and recreated courses to test the mastery path tool, but continue to get the same results. I have searched the forum, and it appears that others have had this problem and have submitted a ticket. However, I haven't seen an explanation for a solution. Does anyone know of a solution? Or can someone explain what I am doing wrong?
Thanks!

10650941, greetings! I'm sorry to hear about the problem you're having with Mastery Paths. Since this appears to be a known issue/problem, my recommendation is to submit a ticket to Canvas Support to see what they would recommend in terms of how to fix this/what to do. Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you come back and let us know what they have to say about the problem?
Thanks! Kona

Rebecca, I agree with Kona. This has been discussed before:

Best of luck!
Thanks Kona. I will report back what I find out.
For those of you who happened upon this question because you are also having trouble with mastery path, could you please either like this reply, and/or leave a brief comment so we can see how widespread this problem is?
Thanks!
Rebecca
This problem is incredibly frustrating. Online courses should not require the user to refresh for the path to load.
I think it may just not work at all with the test student... there seem to be several threads similar to this, although I cannot find that limitation clearly spelled out. Although you mentioned demo students...
That makes it REALLY hard to tell if they are set up correctly. I cannot easily use fake students to test mine... I've set some up multiple times and cannot really get it to work in testing at all.
I was able to set up mastery paths using a Free for Teachers account. Both the test student and the demo students worked. We have a ticket open with Canvas so hopefully we will be able to get some clarification and direction. I'll keep this thread updated.
Thanks for the update! Let us know what you find out from support!
I had one of my actual students test it for me and the mastery path would not populate even though the message that it was locked until the quiz was graded was gone.
Adding my voice to this thread.
I have tested Mastery Paths with a simple Multiple Choice quiz leading to two Pages depending on the students choices, and have received the "Mastery Paths still processing" message. Countless refresh does not cause any change. I have used both the Student View option and also an actual test student account and received the same error message.
Really critical to get some response from Canvas on this.
I am using Mastery Paths in our Canvas Training for Faculty. I get the same error: Locked until mastery path is processed... The learner is a real person, a member of our faculty. It has been over 24 hours and the lock still persists. When I pull up the mastery paths report, it shows the learner in the appropriate band for their initial score, and the score shows in the teacher and student gradebooks. Other learners have had no problem.

Hello all.
Finally got a fix from the Canvas Engineering team. Seems for Mastery Paths to work, it requires a default admin 'Conditional Release API' which was missing from our Canvas instance account. See the Canvas Release notes on Mastery Paths under "Account Setup". We were not aware of this account.
Check to see if this admin account is available in your Canvas instance. If not, you will need to ask them to recreate it.
Once the Engineering team recreated this Conditional Release API admin account, our Mastery Paths worked seamlessly. You can ask them to refer to our ticket #04231194.
Best regards,
Bruce
Thanks Bruce.
Canvas engineers fixed our instance of mastery paths, but did not relay what the exact fix was. Hopefully Bruce's answer will help others who have had this issue.
I too have had this problem yesterday and contacted Support. It was passed to L2 and fixed overnight. We did have the default admin 'Conditional Release API' on our Canvas account so it was something in addition to this..
I'm having the same problem here, using the lone Test Student I have. I'm assuming that by now the Conditional Release API is part of the installation here, though I can't see it anywhere. The only relevant thing I see under "Apps" is Mastery Paths itself. Is there a general fix yet?
You may need to check with your institution's Canvas administrator. The Conditional Release API is something that your administrator should be able to check on. In addition, you may need to submit a ticket to Canvas detailing the issue. Hopefully one of these avenues will resolve the issue.
When working with Mastery Paths, how have people managed to bypass the perpetual processing state on the initiating project/quiz/assignment etc? While fastidiously refreshing the page on-which Mastery Paths originate, we haven't been able to progress enough to unlock Mastery Paths and populate each Module.
We are really having trouble with Mastery Paths.
This was NOT the case last year. We have used Mastery Paths extensively and our students were always assigned their new assignments immediately upon submitting their quiz.
Now more often than not, we get the message that Mastery Paths are locked until the quiz has been graded. The problem is that he quiz grades automatically and IS already graded.
This is making our course a nightmare. We rely on Mastery Paths to make our course work.
Chiming in here to lend my voice.
In an average month over the two years, we maybe have one student get stuck every two weeks or so. The problem is pervasive enough that we've just stopped reporting them all to Canvas. That said, after many, many tickets, Canvas Support provided us with a (mostly) functional solution that works in 95% of cases, albeit one that unfortunately can't be automated.
I can genuinely say that I wish we didn't build any mastery paths, and recommend that if you can avoid them, you absolutely should. It's clear that mastery paths are a bit too buggy to have been released already, but unfortunately we've got 1000 users (large, yes, I know) so we're already stuck in something of a 'sunk cost fallacy' where too many students have already taken the necessary workshops/modules for us to change them. As others have stated, the fact that we use mastery paths extensively has become a nightmare.
Canvas stated that with mastery paths, some students can get stuck even after passing a particular assignment by a specific margin. They said that this has to do with the course's cache, and that the cache would need to be manually cleared by the course instructor each time someone gets stuck, which is a bit annoying. They recommended:
Doing so should manually clear the cache and allow the student through immediately. We do this very frequently, and it works most of the time. Hope this helps others until Canvas finds a more permanent fix.
