The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Hi, I'm an admin and I need to make some changes to the teachers who are teaching various courses. I know that I can ADD a user from outside of the course by clicking on the "+" sign, but what is the fastest way to remove a teacher? Must I go into the actual Teacher's account and scroll through the entire enrollment list and delete the course that way? Or, is there a quicker way to do so? Thanks.

Ah, rpsimon, I now see that you started your question with "I'm an admin." Sorry I missed that! You should be able to remove the enrollment by following the instructions in the Unenroll User section of https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12629-421473701 Nevertheless, I think it would be wise for you to run this past the people who run your SIS first, as it's possible that a user you manually unenroll will be automatically re-enrolled from the SIS.
Hello rpsimon, Welcome to the Canvas Community!
The information you requested about removing a teacher is in the link below. Enjoy!
Thanks @wwolf and I greatly appreciate your prompt response. I am not getting that as an option.
rpsimon, do you have admin privileges? If you do, you might want to check what permissions your institution has associated with the instructor role. Or if your school is adding enrollments via SIS, that might be another reason the capability has been disabled. It's explained in the blue section of the lesson:
- Removing enrollments is a course permission. If you cannot remove enrollments in your course, your institution has restricted this feature.
- Enrollments may be added by your institution's student information system (SIS). If an enrollment includes an SIS ID, only admins can remove an enrollment from the course.
I am an admin. I'm not the one who is in charge of the SIS. I would definitely be happy to pass on the information to see if this can be enabled. I'm still stumped as to why I cannot do it.

Hi rpsimon
stefaniesanders is correct - if your users are added by SIS integration, then every time integration runs, the teacher would be re-added to the course.
This trick here is to find out who is responsible for maintaining and updating your school's SIS, and have them change the teacher there, then you manual delete through Canvas will not be undone every time integration runs.

Thank you, both! I was just making the changes manually. Whoever is putting the data for the SIS should make sure to make the changes there too.
Actually, going through the user enrollments is what I have been doing thus far. I was wondering if there was a quicker way to do it.
Hi again, rpsimon
The easiest way is to make sure the SIS is correct first, otherwise Integration will just keep putting the user back in the course. Don't count on enrollment services, or whomever at your school, making the changes without your asking them firmly! They seldom get the need. We have to go through this at the start of every term. Find a helpful person on their team, and make them your "Go-To" person. Our SIS/Canvas integration runs every hour, on the hour, so if they don't change it we really can't. Can be quite frustrating at times.
I don't know if this is the easiest, but as an Admin, I just open the course, and remove them from the People page. Sometimes, if I know the instructor is new and has few courses, I will do it from their profile page.
I hope this is helpful,
Kelley
@kmeeusen I am going through the replies again. I can't remember if someone mentioned "Open Registration" in regards to this topic or not. Is that related to unenrolling teachers from courses? If not, what is the purpose of Open Registration? Thanks so much.
Hi again,rpsimon
Open Registration has absolutely no connection to un-enrolling anybody. Open registration allows students to be added to a course, even if the students don't have a Canvas account in your institution. Students will create their account during the course enrollment process.

Hi again, rpsimon
My good friend and colleague, stefaniesanders , tells me that you were kind of handed the Canvas Admin job rather precipitously. I get how tough that can be! Sooo................. My LMS Support Specialist and I got our Canvas instance three days before our brave pilot faculty were scheduled for Canvas training, and just a couple short weeks out from our pilot term. We didn't make too bad of a mess of it, so I hope I can help just a little bit to ease your load. We did attend the 2012 InstructureCon well before we had our instance, and it helped us, but that option is not available to you.
And, as I said earlier, this Community and myself specifically! I wish I could just plop down next to you for a couple hours and give you a kick-start, but anytime you need help, please feel free to ask.
Best wishes,
Kelley
Thank you so much, Kelley! I really appreciate it. I worked very hard for hours and hours this summer trying my best to get trained. If I receive points every time I post and interact in this community, I’d love to know how many I should have right now as the point system is not currently working and hasn’t been for the past few months. ![]()
Tell me about it, rpsimon !
I actually joined the Community of the company that hosts this platform used by our Community. I wanted to complain - next thing I know, I earned a badge in there! Hey dudes, we want to earn badges too!
Hang in there, and any time you have a question, just holler and we will help.
