Anyone else having a problem with newly added YouTube videos not displaying within Canvas as expected in Chrome and IE? Currently, when a link to a YouTube video is pasted in to the rich content editor of a page, and then the page is saved, the thumbnail is visible, but upon clicking the play arrow, nothing displays. This is in Chrome and IE. The work-around is to have students open the video in a new tab outside of Canvas, which is ok in the meantime, but should not be a long term solution. In Firefox the videos work as expected.
You tube video links added last semester seem to be working fine. Not sure why this is.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Thanks,
Holly

Update: You can grab the embed code from the video and paste it in the HTML editor and it will play in Chrome. It's just the pasting via the RCE that doesn't work when trying to view via Chrome.
And yes, Firefox is another workaround, but it would be nice for the videos to work in all supported browsers. Fingers crossed.
Just took a support call for this, same situation, just a black box where the video should play. The Faculty member has students involved in a Discussion, so that is where this occurs (same RTE). She mentioned it worked last year and last week, but not this week.
I literally just created and added some YouTube video using Firefox and everything works/looks fine.
Thus I'd say another work around for now would be to use Firefox.

Good point. I was adding via htlm, not rce, so I can't promise it works using the rce in Firefox.
I am having the issue in all browsers. I can click the link to open in another tab, but the thumbnail just enlarges to a black box, with no video playing.
We see the same in our Canvas courses. Clicking on the thumbnail results in a black box to appear instead of the video.
This is a huge issue for us. Here's the reply we got today from our CSM when we screamed about it:
I have been putting additional pressure on this case. It appears to be in the coding of Chrome and the updates that they are working on, but we are in the process of rewriting our JS to try force YouTube videos to play in HTML rather than the Flash that is built into their configuration. We will be approaching this from multiple angles but know that this has been given high priority.
We've been unsuccessful in getting any kind of ETA for a fix. I don't know why Instructure hasn't announced this.
I heard from our CSM yesterday that a fix was in the works, so they are working on it.
We are experiencing this in Chrome and Safari, but videos are playing in Firefox. Hoping for a fix soon, since I don't know of any way to identify classes in which Youtubes were "embedded" using just the link. Chrome is the number one browser used by students. We will recommend going back to using the full embed code for new youtube links.
Okay, thanks. Good to know it wasn't just me. ![]()
