Changing the Elements for Refine in Catalog

Is there a way to change the Refine options in the upper right corner of Catalog? Right now it can sort by price, start date, etc. Unfortunately, none of those apply for our listings. We'd really like to be able to customize so people can search/filter by more that one topic at a time.
