[Assignments] Do not post an assignment to calendar

Problem statement:

As a K-12 district that has quarterly grading periods, there are times when an assessment falls near the closing of a grading period. This poses a problem as students are expected to be provided time to do corrections or retakes. But, we cannot delay taking to the assessment. So, we give them the assessment but say that it will be applied to the next grading period. Currently, Canvas does not allow for me to create an assignment with a posting date for when they take it, but a different date for posting within the gradebook so that it appears in the next grading period. The workaround is to create an event so they know when the assessment happens and then create an assignment for the gradebook so it posts in the correct grading period. But, as it is the same assessment with the same name, it now shows up twice in the calendar. This creates confusion.

Proposed solution:

2 possible solutions:

  1. When creating assignments, allow for multiple posting dates. One for the calendar and one for the gradebook. This would give instructors the flexibility to move dates around district due dates without having the assignment show up twice in the calendar.
  2. When creating assignments, provide a checkbox that says "do NOT post to calendar" (as the default is to post). Thus, when the workaround I've described is used, it will only appear one time in the calendar. This would also be a great feature if instructors want to pre-load assignments into the gradebook, but don't want the students to view them yet on the calendar. They can later return to the assignment and uncheck the box for it to appear.
