[Assignments] Late Passes
Students often face extenuating circumstances, and so many instructors will offer students the opportunity to turn work in late. However, some students view this grace as a reason to turn in all assignments late, harming their education by preventing them from learning the material when it is relevant, which prevents them from contributing to the class's learning and thereby harms the full class.
I would like to be able to assign a set number of late passes to students. With paper assignments, it is possible to give students paper passes that they are required to turn in with their late work, and it is therefore possible to limit late work to true necessities. With a digital late pass system, students can still have the opportunity to turn in late work if needed, but it can help curb some of the major issues with students turning in everything late. While it is obviously possible to just prevent anyone from turning in an assignment late or to assign things to individual students, both of these options make it nearly impossible to differentiate by student need, either because it enforces a blanket solution or because it requires both me and the student to know in advance that they will need to turn in something late, which often is not the case.
