At the end of every semester it seems we deal with several instructors who have inadvertently created assignments worth 0 points, and in many cases (except where they chose to display grade as percentage) we have to tell them that they will need to regrade those assignments.
Always leave the point value blank when a new assignment is created and don't allow the assignment to be saved without a point value. This would require the instructor to enter a point value (which could be 0) but it would prevent them from unintentionally saving an assignment worth 0 points.
