Problem to Solve: Currently, account-level calendars that students are subscribed to are not visible in the Canvas App under the 'Other Calendars' section. In the app, students can only view Course and Group calendars. Our Student Services team uses account-level calendars to communicate important dates, events, and opportunities to all students. However, because these calendars are not available in the app, students relying on mobile access are missing critical information when they are away from their laptops. Use Case: A student is travelling to a placement and relies on the Canvas App to check important updates. Student Services has posted an account-level calendar event about an upcoming placement briefing. Because the student cannot see account-level calendar events in the app, they miss this important information, resulting in confusion and additional follow-up work for staff. Enabling account-level calendar visibility in the app would help ensure all students stay informed, regardless of the device they are using.
We propose that account-level calendars be made visible in the Canvas App under the 'Other Calendars' section, alongside Course and Group calendars. This would allow students to view all relevant calendar events, including those posted at the account level, directly from the app without needing to access Canvas via a web browser. Why: Students increasingly rely on the Canvas App for quick and easy access to important information while on the go, especially when they are not near a laptop or desktop computer. Account-level calendars are an essential communication tool for Student Services to share key dates, events, and opportunities with the entire student body. Without visibility of these calendars in the app, there is a significant risk that students will miss important updates, which impacts their engagement, participation, and overall experience. Ensuring account-level calendar events are accessible through the app will improve communication, reduce missed information, and support a more seamless mobile experience for students.
