[New Quizzes] “Build on Last Attempt” should integrate with “Item Bank” questions.

Problem statement:

This is concerning the “Build on Last Attempt” feature in New Quizzes. When activated and a student attempts a quiz for a second time all Formula type question will be regenerated, however randomly selected Item Bank type questions are NOT redrawn from the bank. This means that unless a quiz is written entirely with Formula questions there is no way to prevent a student from working the exact same questions on each attempt.

Proposed solution:

When a student re-attempts a quiz for which “Build on Last Attempt” is selected all questions that are randomly selected from an Item Bank should be redrawn to ensure a student takes a similar question but not the exact same question.

User role(s):

instructor

Thank you for sharing this idea with the Instructure Community!

While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production. Upon review by the product team, this request was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans.

Build on last attempt was intended to show previously incorrect questions in subsequent attempts so that a student could have an additional chance to correctly answer those same questions. Adding the ability to re-randomize on the subsequent attempt in a Build on last attempt quiz is a feature request we are not likely to take on in the near future due to the complexity of how that could be achieved.

An instructor who would like the next attempt to have a new randomized question from an item bank can do so without this setting in place.

Thank you for collaborating, and we hope that you submit another idea in the future!
