I give students instructions as to how to customize their notifications, but many don't do it. Recently I had a student tell me that she has ALL Canvas messages marked as spam, because she was tired of getting so many. A class recently expressed confusion, thinking a new assignment I posted was an announcement, even though it wasn't something due for weeks. They explained that every time I open, edit, or change anything they get notifications. They clearly have notification fatigue. Can you imagine how many notifications a day these students are getting if they are taking a full load online? They miss important messages from inbox and comments because they get so many notifications.
Let local Canvas admins set student notification defaults. This can allow messages, comments and announcements to be sent to students immediately, and everything else as daily summaries or not at all to help fight notification fatigue.
