[People] navigation area should signify section, not user, active status

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas LMS

Problem statement:

If a student is enrolled in a crosslisted course containing both ENG-101-001-2024-030 and ENG-101-002-2024-030, moving from section 001 to 002 would result in showing both sections in People with no way to differentiate enrollments. To determine which section they are enrolled in, an instructor would have to go to Grades and filter by section.

Proposed solution:

Instead of using "inactive" status for a student enrollment in a course in the "name", mark it by section in the "section" column. The old format: Evan Downing (inactive) ENG-101-001-2024-030 Would become: Evan Downing ENG-101-001-2024-030 (inactive) ENG-101-002-2024-030 This allows for instructors to see at a glance which student is active in which section. This is especially important for University enrollments that automatically integrate with products like SAP, which could allow a student to individually move from one section to another repeatedly until the drop/add date had passed.
