Remove colour overlay from course cards that have an image

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

Howdy all,

Firstly I have to say the new course cards image feature is awesome and a great leap forward. I have been using it a bit now and have a small request for a future revision.

When a course is given an image for the course card on a user's dashboard, I would really like to see the colour overlay removed (so that the image does not looked washed out with the user selected colour).

Ideally, I would love to see this configurable on an account level rather than an individual course level, but that is just from an administrator's perspective.

Just to visualise this more, the current behaviour with a couple of different colours:

And the ideal/requested behaviour:

Additional thoughts:

I do realise the colour is important for a few different areas in relation to the course, so perhaps the bottom bar could be extended as a border around the entire card (just as one example).

Many thanks  team,

Keep up the awesome work!

I'm trying to test this feature in one course ('Allow' enabled at the system level) and I keep getting the same upload error - no matter the file type or size.

I think I remember  @James ‌ saying he was getting a persistent error like that, although I don't remember if he was able to get it fixed or not...?

rgibson1, Canvas is aware of the issue and working on it. That's all I know. CNVS-36069

rgibson1 and laurakgibbs, this upload error issue happened to me as well, and I submitted a ticket. Last week I received an update that the fix has been deployed to beta. Please refer to https://community.canvaslms.com/message/68048-course-card-image-upload-error

So is this available now? Can I choose no color overly to the course on Dashboard?

@jhelms1  Welcome to the Canvas Community! Yes, the ability to remove the color overlay from the course cards on the Dashboard is a setting available to each user. The instructions are in the Change Dashboard View section of https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10587-4212710330 (that's the lesson for students, but the process is the same for instructors).

Maybe I missed it here, but didn't see a link taking us to 'How To' information? Now that this feature request has been implemented, here is a link for how to do thisHow do I make the color label on my course clear so it doesn't cover up the picture I used?  My thanks to  @erin_keefe

Hello,

This request was completed, but updates since 2016 must have caused the overlay to come back by default. There have been a couple other requests:

August 2018 score 3https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/12084-color-overlay-option-on-individual-student-courses" modi...

2017 score 224https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/8611-new-color-overlay-feature-should-have-a-way-to-change-def...

We would like to use Dashboard images to distinguish between course sections, but the color overlay limits what we can do as we don't want to our Canvas users to have to turn off the Color Overlay so the image looks like it should. That would be so great and that is all I want for Christmas. 🙂

Thank you,

🙂 Andy
