Answering Canvas Messages In Outlook / by Email

In the past, when a student sent me a message in Canvas, I would get a copy of it in my work email. When I replied to it in my email (either by Outlook or by Apple Mail on my personal laptop), the student would receive the reply in Canvas, and my reply would show up in Canvas Messaging, showing that I did reply. I LOVED THIS! Not only did it make my job a bit easier, but I was also able to show student services I did address the student's question when someone would say I didn't (CMA!).
Now, this function seems to have been turned off. Is there anyway I can turn it back on, or is this a Microsoft / IT HelpDesk issue?
