Assignments show missing status when they should be late

I am having an issue in Canvas where assignments are showing a status of Missing when they should be Late. The issue is specific to one student in a class. Some of the assignments are submitted through an external tool, however at least one of them is a Canvas quiz. The quiz does show a submission time as well.

While the status for each assignment can be manually edited, why is Canvas not setting the status to Late automatically?
