Hi All,
We want to use Canvas quizzes for exams, using a complementary browser locking tool.
Key caveat... we need a spell checker to be enabled while locked down.
We trialled using Respondus LockDown Browser, but discovered that it does not have spellcheck functionality.
Please let me know if anyone knows of a browser locking type tool that works with Canvas to take tests securely without the opportunity to cheat, and with the option to enable a spellchecker.
Thanks,
Lee
When I am building a quiz with the New Canvas Quizzes, and I am adding a question, I see a checkbox for "Spell-check." It is just below the checked box for "Rich-Content Editor" in the screen shot below.
Would that work for You?
Hi - thanks so much for taking the time and apologies for the delay.
I do know about spell check in the actual Canvas quiz... but unfortunately, this doesn't carry through to the quiz in Respondus LockDown Browser because, as I understand it, Canvas uses an operating system level spell check which is blocked by the LockDown Browser.
Any other solutions?
Hi @Leeedgerton - I just discovered this, too, and we've been using Respondus Lockdown Browser for several years. The instructions we wrote say that it alerts you to a spelling error if you're still typing the word, but not after that. Now apparently that's gone, for both Quizzes and New Quizzes.
Respondus' documentation is all over the board, and none of the pages are dated so you can't tell how old info is. Even more strange is that https://web.respondus.com/support/dictionaries/ says that Respondus 4.0 includes spell-check for multiple dictionaries. But https://support.respondus.com/hc/en-us/sections/4409696144411-Respondus-Announcements says their Lockdown Browser versions are 2.x.
Further investigation indicates that Respondus 4 is a Windows-based Quiz authoring system. It seems to have spell check, but I haven't read the details. That may help you, but it leaves me confused as to why they would have similar product names with different version numbers.
Hi - thanks so much for your reply. I have learned that Respondus 4.0 is their exam writing tool... so different to the LockDown Browser... and yes I agree... a bit confusing using versioning to delineate tools that are completely different in nature. I am still waiting to hear if Respondus will enable spell checker functionality but looking for other options in the event that they can't.
