Calendar events and BigBlueButton conferences

Hi, I'm trying to figure out the right sequence to set up an event that is to occur at different daytimes for different sections and then how that will be managed in Conference section (using Free for Teacher Canvas)?

If it is the one event with multiple section day/times, is that still one event in Conference?   I want to record it - in which case, how are these stored/accessed for the different sections?

I've been playing around with it and it seems like once the first event starts, it stays as an 'in progress' conference, even though there is no active section in the conference.  I'm not sure how the recordings are accessed by the different sections.  

Maybe I need to set up as separate events in Calendar, specific to a section?

I believe I understand your question, but feel free to correct me if I have misunderstood you. 

  • With Conferences, you can invite all course members, or specific students.sections. You can either setup one conference for the entire course, or two separate ones for each section. If you have one event with multiple sections, it would be stored as one recording and all invited students and sections would have access to it after the conference has concluded. 
  • For your question about recordings, it is important to mention that the Canvas' standard recording feature will store your recordings in Conferences for 7 days and then remove them automatically for users of the Free Tier of Conferences. 
  • The Conference will show as in progress until it is concluded

Typically instructors will set up separate conference meetings and assign them each to the different sections of the course to keep the recordings separated. This allows the students to go back and watch the recording for only their section and what was covered during that time. But with what you are describing, you can have one conference for the two sections. There is not an issue with doing it that way as far as I can tell. It all really comes down to how you want to configure the course conference for your students in different sections.

If you want to only allow students from a section to watch the recording for their time, setting up a separate conference for each section would be the way to go. If that is not an issue, you can totally use one conference for both sections. The recording will just be a bit longer and they might need to fast forward to the point where their section jumped in.
