Canvas Email - Use of Archive

I have hundreds of emails with discussion threads each quarter.  I noticed that Canvas is placing new emails received in "Archive" when I place the original email (root email in the thread) in "Archive."  As such, Canvas does not notify me a new email has arrived as it is cataloging it as part of my Archived emails.

Can I stop this?  Or what is the best method to reduce the clutter of my InBox during the class quarter without Archiving?
