Copied assignment replaced existing one

I was creating a new quiz as a copy of an old one. I changed the name, questions, and settings in a sample course and then copied it into my new course. Only to find that the original quiz is gone, with all of its submissions. Help! Can the old quiz be recovered? I assumed the copy created a completely new assignment, and that especially after the changes to the name would not replace the old one.

I am not able to provide any explanation as to what happened with the overwrite or deletion of the assignment.  However, if you go to your course home page and then put /undelete at the end of the url, you will see a list of items that can be restored.  Hopefully your quiz is one of them.
