I have long been noticing that, once I think I am done with grading student submissions for a particular assignment in Canvas (as indicated by the lack of "to do" submissions in the drop-down menu for that assignment in the Speed Grader) I find, very often, upon returning to the "Dashboard" and refreshing the page, a link to an ungraded submission for that same assignment.
And, every single time this happens and I activate the link, I am sent by the Speedgrader to grade a student with no submission for that assignment, so I give them a zero advising them that there was no submission to grade. Almost always, there is no response from the student, as they are allowed to (re)submit assignments multiple times. But today, I actually heard from such a student, who was inquiring why they received a zero for an assignment they had never submitted.
Is this a known issue in Canvas, or is it just that it is easy for a student to accidentally submit an assignment without realizing it?
On the Assignments page, you would usually see "x out of y submissions graded". Canvas wouldn't usually create a task/ reminder for you to grade an unsubmitted assignment. You should probably reach out to your school's Canvas admin as they may have a peculiar configuration.
