Group Discussions - Groups Have Different Prompts

Hello there,

Is there a current solution to allow a singular Group Discussion assignment with, let's say, three groups, each with its own prompt to discuss? We could set up three separate discussions with the individuals assigned. But this solution opens the can of worms with assigning users.

This course is being developed to be rolled over each term, so I am hoping for a more streamlined solution that is easy to use for enrollments, grading, and overall intuitiveness.

Each group has its own prompt to discuss.

Hi there @kari !

Does your institution have Differentiation Tags enabled?
If so, you can create tags (they technically operate as hidden groups) and assign your students to those tags. Luckily, you don't have to do this one by one for each student as you can select multiple students at the same time. Then, assign those tags to the discussion using the Assign To feature, and you're good to go!

Noah, doesn't your solution still require having different discussion forums set up for each tag? And I believe the tags need to be remade each time the course is rolled over, correct? If so, just curious, how is that an improvement over setting up a different discussion forum for each group and then assigning that discussion to a group? (if you can even do that, I haven't tried.)

You cannot have one discussion topic with a different prompt for different sets of tags.

The answer for whether tags are copied over or not technically depends on if the institution has anything custom set-up or not for those to be copied.

The solution I provided Kari with will still allow students to have their own respective discussion prompts, and (in my opinion at least) allows her to assign tags to students a little faster than groups, since you can do a bulk-add for tags. However, of course, that depends on if she is assigning students at random or not.
