Group locked for students who are already members

I have set up a group in which assigned students are to post their class notes under the heading "Files" and a subheading I created called "Class Notes." I put all students into this group. But my students have been unable to upload their notes, because the "Class Notes" subheading appears as locked. It isn't locked for me, but when I go to the student view, it is locked. I verified that what the students are seeing is a locked group. How can I make this subheading accessible to the students? (I should add that the class has started and that all students are signed up for Canvas.)

I'm shooting from the hip a bit here, but I wonder whether you've managed to create a personal file/folder.

If you want an easier way to deal with the requirement (I struggle a little with the thin design of Groups area, and the lack of a home page), you could achieve something similar in Discussions, which can be set to Groups....
