Hiding answers on essay questions

We have created a lot of quizzes for our course and all of the question types are "Essay question". We have left the box blank that says "Let students see the correct answers" because we are wanting them to look up the correct answers and resubmit them. However they can see the correct answers as soon as they submit the quiz, even before we grade it. We believe it is because these are essay questions and the answers are typed in the "general answer comments" box. Has anyone dealt with this before and does anyone know if there is a way to prevent students from seeing these? We want to have them there to make our grading quick and easy. We don't to have to re-format all of our quizzes. Thank you so much for any assistance.

Hi @melship,

The only way I know of to not show the content of that box in Classic Quizzes would be to disable the "Let Students See Their Quiz Responses (Incorrect Questions Will Be Marked in Student Feedback)" option completely so students wouldn't see any feedback at all.  This is basically, as you have discovered, essay questions in Classic Quizzes don't really have a "correct" or "incorrect" response to them.

Now if you have New Quizzes available and use those instead, there re more feedback options for essay questions.  Your school/institution may not have New Quizzes available yet or may not encourage you to use that system, so you may want to talk to your local Canvas team.

Let us know if this helps at all.
