How do you get an assignment that is submitted via an external tool to show up on To-Do List?

I noticed that assignments I created using a Google doc are not showing up on the student To-Do List. In the setup, there is no checkbox to add to the To-Do List. While I would like to know why, I would settle for a work-around that doesn't involve creating another page that I can put on the To-Do List. Any suggestions?
