I am currently creating some Master Shells in Canvas. I would like to use New Quizzes, but when it comes to embedding images in the quiz questions, the images themselves don't seem to be uploaded to the Master course files. They seem to go to some random AWS server.
When importing the Master to a given term shell, what guarantee do I have that the embedded image on the AWS will stay good? Is this just another reason for me to use Classic Quizzes instead? I don't want to have to reupload these quiz images in every shell, and I certainly don't want to have to reupload them if the AWS server decides to dump its cache. What's the deal? At least in Classic Quizzes I can store the embedded image in the Master Course Files and know that it will not break.
Hi @BGowar ...
This really isn't an answer to your question, but I have noticed this as well. 😕
Back in April 2022, I created two Feature Ideas that are related to files that are attached to New Quizzes questions. Not that these Feature Ideas will help to answer your question, but I thought I'd pass along the links in case you were interested in reading through my suggestions...as it seems slightly related to your question:
Take care, and be well.
Hi @BGowar ,
I think the June 17 2023 change to using the Rich Content Editor has also changed where images are stored in New Quizzes. My old images still point to an AWS server location, but newly embedded images show a Canvas file location, a generic location with a file ID unelated to the course it's in. The older Amazon server location still finds the image, which is good; those have not changed in banks or when used in quizzes. The amazon server address is outside of Canvas and is available to new quizzes in all courses. Seems to be working fine, although I haven't tried it in a Master course.
@Chris_Hofer , does this answer your idea about files attached? Embedded images seem to work fine. If you try to embed a course document or page, you get a warning it won't work in other courses. I like that warning.
NOTE: Turns out the non-course specific URL for images was only when I used the Cidilabs/Design Tools embed tool; the Canvas image embed tool still returns a URL with the Course ID. Testing with a student in a different course, a new quiz with an Item Bank question using a course specific image, that student was able to see the image. Student was not enrolled in the course where the images resides. This might not apply to Blueprint courses, have not tested that.
Thank you, @Nancy_Webb_CCSF ...
I tested this out in my own sandbox course by creating a brand new New Quiz. Then, I added a multiple choice question with an embedded image using the RCE. Once I went back to my course "Files", I searched for the image name, and it was in a folder called "Uploaded Media 2" ... maybe because I already had another folder called "Uploaded Media"?
Anyway...thank you for this information, Nancy.
Darn, I realized I was uploading using our CidiLabs Design Tools image embed tool rather than the Canvas tool. They behave differently. The Canvas tool creates a course specific URL, but CidiLabs creates a URL unrelated to the course, no course ID. When saved to an Item bank and used in another course, it uses the same URL as the original question. Course specific images still seem to work in other courses, visible to students, but I don't know how that will work with a Master course. Does new quizzes give students permission to view images located in other courses?
Either way, I was talking about the URL rather than the filename in Files, the URL doesn't show the filename. Still, when I chose a course file to embed using the Canvas image embed tool , it did not make a copy, it used the original file so no (1) or -1 was appended in Files. Using the CidiLabs upload tool, if I unchecked "Overwrite if Exists", it did create a -1 copy of the file with a different ID number; it's a choice.
Images are treated differently than other files, files located in another course are not accessible to students when the quiz is in a different course.
