Photo/Download issue

How can I post a photo for viewing rather than download? Half the responses our students post upload as a photo we can see, but the rest are uploaded and then forcing us to download the photo or video to view it. Is this because Canvas is at capacity for holding our images?

Hi,  @chatt058  Welcome to the Canvas Community! Your screenshots were very helpful, because they're telling us that this is occurring in Canvas discussions. This is easily remedied by disabling students' ability to attach files to their discussion replies, letting them know you've done that and why, and reminding them to use the instructions in How do I embed an image in a discussion reply as a student?‌ to provide their photos.

You'll find instructions for disabling file attachments to discussion replies in How do I allow students to attach files to a course discussion? (just uncheck the Attach files to discussions option).

I guess I'm still a little confused. Does this mean students cannot upload their original photos? The discussion assignment requires them to upload photos from their own daily lives/screenshots etc. Would they have to upload these photos somewhere to embed them just to reply to the discussion post?

As in they would have to upload them to canvas in their user files, then embed them?

Hi Srija Sen,

It used to be that from the Android Student App, you could only attach images and not embed them. But now images can be embedded into the discussion. You may need to inform your students not to Attach (with the paperclip) and if they don't see the image in the message, they should try again.

Here's a screenshot from the Android Student App. I was able to use the image icon and choose an image from my phone Gallery.

Feel free to grab my image and edit for your purposes.

Yes,  @chatt058 ‌, students can upload their own original photos to their files area beforehand, or can do it directly from their devices while they're composing the reply. When they follow the instructions in the document they'll see that they are presented with an option to upload.
