I am a middle school teacher, mt students recently received Chromebooks that flip into tablet mode. I am having the upload photos of their work, however they are unable to turn on the rear camera and take a photo in tablet mode. This is creating a frustrating time for them while they try to take clear photos. It would be much easier if they could flip the camera in Canvas. I am trying to have them avoid taking a photo, saving it, then uploading it as that can be a lot of steps for a 6th grader.
I don't use a Chromebook; however, I do use Chrome and have run into a similar problem when wanting to change input devices in other web-based services. Can you describe your assignment settings? Is it a File Upload they are using? Or media recording?
When I use the "Record Media" option, it gives me the different cameras as an option under the "Webcam" dropdown. Are your students seeing something different?
@amoldenhauer, did @DeonScanlon suggestion help?
If it did not, can you please reply back with a screenshot (or screenshots) of the settings of your Canvas assignment (see the submission settings would be helpful) so that we can try to look into this a little bit more.
