There really isn't a need to create something new ... such as a search bar ... for a Canvas course. Canvas has recently announced something called Smart Search which will scan your entire course for keywords that you want to search for. You can read more about it at the following links:
I would encourage you to reach out to your school's Canvas administrator or Online Learning / eLearning / Distance Education team to see if/when they might be willing to add this into your Canvas course(s) for you and your colleagues.
