Special characters and symbols in student/teacher app

Hi everyone,
I've recently received questions from colleagues about the use of special characters in the Canvas student/teacher app.
Our students often use the app on their smartphone to submit assignments or post in Discussions. (A few students don't own a personal computer, and so this is the only way for them to work). My colleagues teach French and Spanish, and they have noticed that the app simplifies any "special characters". This means characters which are often used in these languages (like é, è, ç, ñ,...) become "normal" (e, c, n). The problem does not occur on the computer, it only ever hapens via the app.
We are worried, since accents are an important part of the writing assignments of these language courses. Has anyone else experienced this problem, or might you have a tip to fix this?
