Staying with old gradebook (filter by section)

Jump to solution

Is there anyway to turn on the ability to choose a section in the gradebook quickly and easily? Maybe a way to stick with the old gradebook?

I have a large number of sections that I combine into one Canvas course. Now sorting for one section is a pain. I know you can set the filters, but it still takes multiple clicks to do what we could do before.

It looks as though @ScottSchramm may have the "Enhanced Gradebook Filters" Feature Option enabled in his course "Settings".  (I'm not sure if his school turned it on for everyone or if their Canvas admins may let each instructor turn it on per course.)  So, my guess is that Scott is referring to the "old" Gradebook as the one that doesn't have "Enhanced Gradebook Filters" applied.

@ScottSchramm -

I am not sure what you mean by the old gradebook.  The guide below shows how to set the filter for sections and what the gradebook looks llke.

If you have sections in a course, you just have to set the filter by sections once and then there is a dropdown menu for choosing the section you want to grade.

I am not sure how that entails multiple clicks - unless I am missing something - or you have more sections than or displayed at one time and you have to scroll through the list

By "Old" gradebook, I mean before these changes. I just like the way it was, like it is still in SpeedGrader, just a simple drop down. I will probably have to make a different filter for each class section because they are not all having room in the list. It looks fine in SpeedGrader.

Probably me not liking change!

What I see (after selecting filter by sections) is the following in the upper right hand corner of the gradebook

 Do you not have this drop down show up?  Maybe my institution has not advanced to the newer version of the gradebook and I am still using the older version.

No that does not show up. Attached picture is what my screen looks like. I have to keep going to filter to get the next section and all the sections do not fit in the list!

@Chris_Hofer

Thanks.  That explains my confusion.  I'm still on the nice old gradebook.  @ScottSchramm I now understand what you are talking about.

Someone even mentioned in the canvas notes about the extra steps that you are describing.  I don't know why the old drop down functionality couldn't have been kept with the additional features.

Maybe Chris's post will help you with going to your settings and turning off that feature.  Good Luck

Man I feel your pain now.  I had the feature option made available to me by our admins.  I tried it out and I will say that this new filter option sucks when it comes to sections.  They should have the filters you created stay in place across the top and then once you have created them, you can click on whichever button you want to incorporate at that time.  None should be first and then all others after that.

In my 2 minutes of working with it, all I can say is that it needs improvement.

If you have not looked at the enhanced gradebook filters again, I suggest you do.  They have made tremendous improvements from the time of your original question.

I have not done much with the improved version, but it is very good from my 1 minute of looking at it - same amount of time it took me the first time to decide not to use it.
