The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.

Hello everyone,
I am working with a follow teacher who has been using the Flipgrid LTI the past several years with no issues. She teaches ASL so her students are using flipgrid for many assignments.
This Term (started last week) she created an assignment using the LTI and when students open their assignment and recorded the video, the video does NOT show up as submitted in the gradebook OR in speedgrader. The videos can be seen in the grid itself but it is not showing as submitted. From the Student viewpoint, they see their video in the grid but it doesnt show as they submitted anything in the assignment itself. Its acting like the intgration is not passing back the information.
The teacher did not change anything in the way she set up the assignment- and in Term 1 everything worked fine. We went to Flip FAQ and follwed the trouble shooting steps- uninstall and reinstall the integration. Still not working.
Students use their chromebooks to record and access the assignment through Canvas... so they are not going directly to the FlipGrid website and recording from there.
Any ideas? Thanks!
We are not seeing anything in SpeedGrader to show evidence of a submission. We see the video submissions on the Flip ide, but not in the Canvas side.
I'm facing the same issue with my class. It worked just fine until last semester. This probably happened after they updated Flip sometime in December 2022. I don't understand why they would mess with something that has been working very well. The new UI of Flip is bad and now it has integration issues with Canvas.
We are experiencing this issue at our institution. Student submissions for Flip assignments are missing from the Grade area despite having been recoded to Flip several days prior. Flip documentation recommends reinstalling the LTI but this has not resolved the issue for our courses. Has anyone been able to find out more about the problem?
Hey everyone- glad to know its just not this individual teacher or our institution. I am about to call Canvas Support. We've tried everything Flip FAQ recomends and nothing as worked.
I will update this thread if a solution/workaround is found.

Thanks Dianne!
I opened a support ticket with Flip specifically regarding the SpeedGrader issue, and this is the response we received:
At this time, we are aware that a small number of users are having difficulties accessing or adding responses to Canvas-integrated topics.
We've communicated with our Engineering team to have this resolved soon and will be in touch again with updates.
Their response seems more centered on issues with the ability to access and post responses, but I'm not sure if the two problems are related. Curiously, we are also having issues with students not being able to access or respond to their discussion topic through the mobile app, but using Flip on the web seems to be working.
Quick update - Flip followed up and confirmed that the SpeedGrader issue is one of a few issues that some users are experiencing and that their engineers are working to deploy a fix in the next few days.
Quick Update: Called Canvas support today. The person I worked/talked with ultimately said "I don't know". He documented the issue, added a case number and said that our site canvas administrator would be looped in. When I reached out to our canvas admin he said that he uninstalled/reinstalled the LTI globally (at the institute level) and to try again. So now waiting on the teacher to try again and see if that did the trick.
@ddamschen Thanks for the update! And @angela_holland, based on our user experience as well as some posts here in the Canvas community, we also feel the new platform introduced issues. For example, it seems students can no longer respond to Canvas-integrated Flip assignments from their mobile devices by clicking an assignment link in the Canvas mobile app. Though they do get prompted to open the Flip app to respond, Flip throws an error telling them that they are not part of the correct group. We were able to replicate this behavior in a controlled sandbox course and with a few students. Using Google Chrome on a desktop machine seems to be the best workaround at this time.
Update:
It seems the "fix" our site admin did last Friday (uninstall/install of Flip LTI) at the instutional level worked for the orginal issue. The teacher was able to create a new intergrated FLip assignment within Canvas and students were able to view, record/add a video and she was able to see it both in Speedgrader ans as a submission in her gradebook.
However, yesterday our other ASL teacher was not able to create a similar assignment in her Canvas Course. We were finally able to get one to class (ASL 3/4) to work, but in her other class (ASL 1/2) she was getting an error message. She followed the same steps as 3/4 but obvisouly needed to use the consumer key and shared key to create the integration for the 1/2 course. But this time it gave her an error message.
See attached photo- any idea? I didn't have time to investigate yesterday afternoon. This is different issue than my original teacher 😂
Unfortunately, we're out of things to try and have yet to hear back from Flip about a fix for these issues, which they've confirmed they're aware of. We're recommending to our instructors that they do not use the Flip integration on future assignments until we have confirmation that these issues are resolved.
Hi all!
While I hate to see that so many other people are having trouble with Flip, I do also appreciate learning that we are not the only ones 🙂
After three years of promoting Flipgrid to our faculty, we finally have significant buy-in (with *great* results, when it's working!!!) and then they go and change everything and we've been tearing our hair out in Canvas Support/Instructional Design.
I just wanted to share that we've found that the Flip can work with the Canvas Mobile app if the students download the Flip app first (but don't open it!), then access their assignment through Canvas Mobile app, and click "Launch External Tool" at the bottom of the page. It is fussy, and doesn't always work, but our faculty have had quite a bit of success with it.

Thank you for troubleshooting the Canvas Flip integration on mobile. For the California Community Colleges, this is a major equity issue. Over 75% of students at my institution access Canvas from the mobile app. And we simply can't leave out students who do not have access to laptops or desktops with webcams and microphones.
I tried the workaround you mentioned above (download Flip first, do not open, then access through Canvas) and was still unable to access the Flip assignment.
I have several outstanding tickets with Flip about the Canvas integration (issues with mobile users, unable to add co-leads, and mixtape embed) and have not seen any timelines given on fixes. I do see they are now listing "Canvas integration with Flip" as something they are "aware and actively working to fix." It would be nice to have a timeline so we can inform our faculty who rely on Flip.
We are in the middle of implementing a Humanizing Online STEM initiative that is training faculty on online teaching equity practices that leverage Flip. The main reasons Flip was chosen was because it integrates deeply with Canvas, works well on mobile, and has captions. I hope they can fix the Canvas Integration quickly!!
Hi! It's me again- the orginal poster 🙂 This grading period got away from me. We start a new grading period next week - this means all new Canvas courses were created Administratively.
I'm going to reach out to my two ASL teachers and see how Flip behaves this quarter. Fingers crossed. 🤞
I was able to get it to work by restarting my computer and clearing the cache. Now the Speedgrader works with Flip. I am using the Chrome browser.
