Students in course and section

Hi, I have set up my course and created my first section.  I added students and was able to add them to the section only ie they are not added to the course as well.  What are the implications of this such as what they cannot see?  Do I need to add them to the course as well?  Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean when you say students are added to a section but not to a course.  A course always has at least one section.  When a user is added to the "People" area of a course, that person is also added to a section of the course.

Chris it is possible to add students to the section but not chose the course when browsing what to add them to.  It sounds like adding them to the course AND the section is redundant as the section by default gives them the same access.

Hi @AnitaCunningham,

To expand on what @Chris_Hofer said, all enrollments in Canvas happen at the section level.  Users are enrolled in a section, and a section is attached to a course, therefore giving students in that section access to the course.  It's all by design and it sounds like you have everything set up correctly right now.
