We are using PowerSchool as our SIS and connected with Canvas LMS. We have a teacher who resigned on 2/3 and a new teacher started on 2/4.
How do you handle this change in Canvas? If the teacher who left remains active in PS (but cannot log in), then the new teacher is just listed as a "teacher in the class and none of the previous assignments/grades have been lost, but he cannot get grades to sync to PowerSchool.
If we deactivate the previous teacher in PS, then a new course is created with new teacher name and previous course work from students is lost.
Any guidance is appreciated.
I'm afraid I'm not going to be very helpful here, because I don't have experience with PowerSchool. My advice would be to contact support directly for both PS and Canvas. If there's an integration, there must be a way to handle situations like this.
(And of course, definitely back up the student work that is already submitted, just in case.)
Good luck. Maybe someone else with PS knowledge will chime in.
Thank you, but I have submitted a ticket to both PS and Canvas. Canvas wants me to remove the old teacher/lead for the courses by making this adjustment in PowerSchool, but unfortunately i cannot do that due to our state reporting requirements. I have to report who was teacher of record when the course started on 1/4 for the entire year.
Still waiting to hear from PowerSchool.
If power school were not involved, it is trivial in Canvas to change the teacher of the course. However, your situation is more complicated in the fact that you now have to have two teachers of records because of the requirements.
Good luck on resolving the issue. The only suggestion I could make would be to create another Canvas course for the new teacher put all the grades from the first course into the new course and just end the original course - keeping it in your system to hopefully satisfy the requirements for teacher of record.

Thank you for the idea. I thought about a new course section, but if I do that I fall back into the same scenario I currently have. The course runs from 1/4 - 5/31 so I have to show a Teacher of record for that whole time span otherwise I get an error in PS. Since the new teacher didn't start until 2/4, PS asks who the teacher was from 1/4 to 2/3.
In doing more research, I found that the old teacher didn't use grade pass back so when the new teacher started to use it, he didn't have the assignment categories set to match what is set up in PS.
So to answer the original question, "How do you set up teachers in Canvas when they change mid year,?" For PowerSchool, I will be keeping the original teacher "Active" in PS so they appear in teacher lists, but just make it so they cannot log into PS. In Canvas this keeps the original teacher attached to original course and just adds new teacher to the course which allows all original grades/assignments to be remain. Grades will sync as long as assignment categories match PS.
