Is there a way in the Canvas Gradebook when setting up a course to view the total points as a column to ensure that the course totals a certain number (i.e. 1,000 points) and no errors were made? Or, is the only way to manually add every assignment/export the gradebook and sum the grades?

Hi Michelle,
Unfortunately, the total points possible is not displayed in the Total column, but you can see it if you select a specific student in the Gradebook and then select Grades. You'll see the total points currently awarded to that student, along with the points possible. Just be sure to uncheck the "Calculate based only on graded assignments" checkbox...

Thank you for this reply. If there are no students yet in the course, how can you view these details? Would you have to create a fake student account, add that student to the course, and then view the details?
I was able to see the total course points by doing it this way without having students in the course:
I selected to view as student, did an assignment as a student, left and graded it as an instructor, and then came back as a student and was able to see the total points in a course after deselecting "Calculate based only on graded assignments." Thank you for your help!
Yep, "Student view" basically creates a "fake student" in the course, which would do what you want to do.
