I know that there are some older posts about this and that there is the override trick of deleting the grade, inputting EX, and then deleting that to override the graded portion of a module. Is there a way to completely bypass a module for a student that enters a course say 1/4 or 2/3 of the way in and is then considered exempt from the prior work? What is the best way to give them access to the current module without unlocking modules for students that haven't completed work? I have been watching videos and trying to research this, but haven't found much. This leads me to believe that there unfortunately isn't going to be an answer for this, but I thought I would try....
Something you can do is only assign certain module buttons do specific students.
You can do this by going into the assignment settings, scroll down to 'Assign To', then type in your student's name(s).
I circled what I mean in the photo below. This feature has nothing to do with scores or grades. When these buttons are only assigned to other students, they will not appear for students that are not in the list added below. Just make sure to remove the "Everyone" or "Everyone Else" button!
Hope this helps out a little bit, respond back with any questions!
This helps with the assignment, but the students need to view the content that is on the page of a module. The course that I am teaching is 100% asynchronous and is for Middle School. If I don't force them to read the content page, they don't and then come to me wondering why they can't complete the assignment (hint:all answers are in on the content page). So although I can assign the assignment to them, the assignment still wont unlock because they haven't viewed the content page. I am pretty sure I already know the answer, but so far I haven't found a way to help the student to skip a content page so that they can move to the module that I want them to start at. This happens for several reasons: A student have a surgery and recovery is multiple weeks, students enter the quarter halfway through, etc. For those students, it is a nightmare trying to get them to the module that they should be on because I can't figure out how to override the stipulations on the pages and assignments on previous modules without dismissing them for everyone else.
Hi there jingvals!
Thank you for posting your question. I see you referenced some older posts about this which sent me on a deep dive. I found this thread about entering "EX" like you mentioned.
Other than marking individual items in a module as excused (EX), there is no other way to mark an entire module as excused since they are built off of the smaller items (quizzes/assignments) that must be graded/completed in order to bypass the module.
I hope this helps!
Do you happen to know if Canvas is going to potentially program a way to allow for this? There seems to be a need; especially in cases like I mentioned above where a student transfers late, has surgery, is sick, etc. Sometimes having a Middle or Elementary level student try to catch up with 4-5 weeks of Modules isn't realistic. Having the ability to have that student skip it by maybe having modules have the same "assign to" function as an assignment might be worth exploring. It appears that the only answer for my question are ones that unfortunately don't help at all. I still have a significant problem, but given the nature of the asynchronous course, the only way to control that students go through content in order and to have things auto-unlock is with modules. I suppose this thread has been answered, but technically there is no solution because it seems as though there is no override and an easier solution hasn't been entertained to be programmed. Thank you for the reply! I will have to put on my creative teacher hat and try to figure something out. I just don't have an answer at the moment.
