Good afternoon,
Myself and some colleagues are attempting to help a faculty member come up with a solution for their Canvas course.
They are wanting students to take some sort of pre-requisite quiz to demonstrate competency. If they score let's say a 60-100, then they can move on to the next quiz.
If they score below a 60, then they need to read a review page and complete a review assignment before taking the exit quiz. If they score a 60 or above on that exit quiz, then they can move onto the next module.
We are trying to use a combination of Mastery Paths/Module Requirements/ and Pre-Requisites but not having success with the strategy.
Does anyone have any experience setting up something similar to this in a course? Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you @JordanGarciaNAU for posting a screenshot and for your description of your course design plans. I think a couple of changes to the module requirements will help you achieve your goal. One is to make the Exit Test worth 100 points (or some value greater than or equal to 60). Then you can add a requirement to the Mastery Paths Chemistry Competency module that students have to score at least 60 on the Exit Test. Also I suggest changing the requirement options to make students complete all of the requirements in order instead of just one of the requirements:
Module requirement optionsWith this set up, students are required to first submit the pre-test, then score 60 or higher on the exit test, then view the chem badge. Only after they have done all three things (moderated by your use of mastery paths) will they complete all of the requirements for this module. At that point they will have met the prereq for the Week 1 module.
Thank you for your reply and for helping me work through this issue @ProfessorBeyrer
The issue that I see though is the instructor wants to make it so that if the student gets a 60 or higher on the pre-test, then they can skip to the main module. Therefore, they want to make it so that only those who got fewer than 60 points on the pre-test have to go through that remedial module and take the exit test.
Does that make sense?
Hi @JordanGarciaNAU ,
It does seem that Mastery Paths should work for what you want to do. They do require a fair amount of backward planning. Maybe if you shared a screenshot of how you have your conditional items set up, someone would be able to provide more help. It's not clear from the Modules shot how the Mastery Paths are set up.
Thanks for your reply @TrishaMeyer1
I made a flowchart to illustrate what we're attempting to do.
I added a Mastery Path to the Pre-Test Quiz. If students get a 60-100, they have access to the badge.
If they got a 0-60, then they need to do a reading, assignment, and an exit test. If they get a 60-100 on the exit test, they move onto the badge which is just a page.
The idea is when students access the badge page, Module: Week 1 opens up as it has a pre-requisite module, the Mastery Paths Chemistry Competency.
I added a separate Mastery Path to Exit test, where if students receive a 60-100 on it, then they can move onto the Chem badge. If they get a 0-60, then they must complete the assignment, the reading again, and the exit ticket again.
Then, I added module requirements:
Finally, I added a pre-requisite module to Module Week 1.
When going through it in test student mode, I completed the pre-test and failed it purposefully. Module: Week 1 then becomes unlocked which I do not want to happen. Any idea what may be happening?
Hi @JordanGarciaNAU ,
I need to start by saying I don't use Mastery Paths, so I don't have firsthand experience. But based on what I do know, I think you don't need to set up all those Requirements in your first module. Really the only requirement for opening the Week 1 module is to view the Badge. So only that needs to be a requirement. (I would consider changing it to "mark as done" instead of just "view the item.")
Students who score >60 on the pre-test will go straight to the Badge page, thus meeting the requirement to complete the module and proceed to Week 1. Those scoring 0-60 will be guided by the Mastery Path settings to complete additional items before accessing the Badge page.
I'm not sure why your set-up would allow access to Week 1 without completing the additional items, but maybe your requirements are somehow canceling out the Mastery Paths because they actually create a contradiction (for anyone earning >60, who currently are still "required" to complete those other items according to your set-up).
Good morning @TrishaMeyer1 Thank you for your assistance with this problem. I tried to follow your suggestions, but for some bizarre reason, the Week 1 Module is showing without the pre-req of students marking the Chem Badge "as done" .
