Viewing grade statistics

I have posted the grades for an exam 1 to the grade book. How do I view exam 1 grade statistics for the class (average, distribution, etc.)?

 @klyons , if you entered the exam grades then I’m guessing the students didn’t take the exam in Canvas. If that’s correct then you can’t really get any of the information you’re looking for from Canvas. The best you could do is download your gradebook and open it up in excel and do some of these calculations there.

It's ridiculous to have to download the entire gradebook just to generate the statistics in Excel for a particular assignment or exam. It shouldn't matter that the exam grades are entered manually. Canvas allows you to sort based on those grades, why not generate basic statistics for them?

In the old version of Gradebook, you could see the statistics for any assignment. That seems to be missing in the new Gradebook. WHY?

Chiming in with another ask for this in the new gradebook. Is there really not a way to get this information out of Canvas without downloading it into Excel anymore? Why in the world would this have been removed? I have large classes with multiple TAs and course sites and want to look at averages across different sections for the assignments. Having to download this into Excel for every section every time adds a ton of extra work on my end. Please bring this back. 

(To be clear, I do understand how to download the grade book into Excel, and how to use formulas in Excel. But going from one click in each site to a multi-step process of downloads, file saves, and calculations for every assignment takes a lot of extra time.)

Even the old version of Blackboard (and apparently of Canvas as well) had gradebook statistics, regardless of means of data entry.  The data are there.  How can there not be statistics, calculated and displayed automatically?

Chiming in on wondering why I can't easily see statistics. My U moved from TRACS to CANVAS a couple of years ago, and I have to say that's one feature from TRACS I really miss.

This morning I noticed that if I look at a given student's grades for a manually graded assignment, and click on the info icon, Canvas does report the same kind of statistics as it does for auto-graded m/c quizzes.

However, there seems to be no way for me to see the statistics for the assignment in the grade book (or any other place). Furthermore, unlike for auto-graded quizzes, no histogram of the grades seems to exist anywhere (for manually graded assignments).

I agree with everyone who has said this really has to be a top priority.

A close second one should be not to force users to select avatars that look as if they are designed for 12-year olds, or to turn off emojis for comments, or disable confetti... etc.

Canvas really needs to develop a "Pro" 21st century version for Higher Ed.

This is a very important item. I didn't see this conversation when I was first looking, so I posted a new question with images to see if it will prompt action. My question is more about the statistics for the total column with letter grades to see grade distributions in a course.

I agree - puzzling that we can't see stats for a manually entered Exam.  I did notice that you at least can see the Average in SpeedGrader.

It's amazing to me that such a basic feature (see the grade distribution on a single assignment) is not included in Canvas. This was posted 6 years ago and somehow it still has not been added.

The way to check the assignment statistics in the new gradebook is not as straightforward as it was before, but there is a way to get there. 

1) Click on the Gradebook drop-down (on my screen it's in the top left) and change the view from Traditional to Individual. 
2) Scroll down to Content and choose the assignment for which you want to see statistics. 
3) Scroll down a little more and you'll see the average, plus the highest and lowest score for that assignment. 

Note: Make sure you don't have a grade for your test student, or that will be included in the statistics. 
Note 2: At the time of writing this, there seem to be a bug in the application where the grade for the test student is included as 0 even if there isn't one. I've reported that to my IT dept. and they're working with Canvas to see how to fix it.

There is also another method mentioned on this page from Carnigie Melon: https://www.cmu.edu/canvas/grading/newgradebookfeatures.html. 

This method will show a scatterplot of each assignment and if you click on one of the data points/assignments, it shows the statistics for that assignment. 

Note: The CMU page says to enable the "Analytics Beta" feature. In my Canvas, it's called "New Analytics" and is no longer in Beta.
