My 8th grade module shows large grey lock images when on student view.
A lock icon is generally an indication that the content is not available to students. This can happen if materials are copied from another course, but contain links that point back to materials in the original course.
As a first step, I would use the link validation tool to check the course content and see if there are items that are not accessible to students. See https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-validate-links-in-a-course/ta-p/1001
I'm also having this issue and even deleting the embedded images and reuploading does not fix it. I've verified i have no broken links and all photos are published. Anything else I may be missing?

An image would be embedded in a page (or other section of text, like an assignment description, etc.). What is the image embedded in, and what do you see if you save the page without the image? That would narrow down whether the problem is with the image, or with the page/etc. that the image is embedded in.
This happening to us exactly in the same way. It was originally an imported course, with template images for section dividers and course banners etc. None were linking to another course, but to make sure I deleted all of them and reuploaded new from desktop. Added again, still no luck. They all show as grey lock (huge) icons in student view.
