Hi  @joan_haas  Welcome to the Canvas Community!

You cannot convert an MS Word doc into an assignment, however, you can copy/paste the contents of a Word doc into the instructions editor of a Canvas Assignment, or you can attach the Word Doc for your students to download when they work on the assignment.

I would suggest reviewing the Assignments chapter of the Canvas Instructor Guide.
