Since Canvas made the very curious choice to take away 'set default grade' for assignments where the instructor has so much as touched the grade column, how are people in large classes handling low-stakes check-in assignments?
Previously, for say a short response check-in to ask about students' understanding of a Canvas, one could have the 'essay' item, go through the gradebook and X off the people who didn't participate, and then use 'set default grade' to issue credit to everyone else since the assignment's purpose was just to check-in (and maybe take attendance while encouraging reflection) and read through quickly in Speedgrader later.
Now, if one has touched the grading column at all--even with a mistaken click that is undone--the ability to issue default grades is gone.
I have not tried with the overwrite box selected because that does not help. I am seeking to differentiate between people who were present and tried and those were not.
Others have noted this on here, but I have not seen solutions. I just don't have hours to click through all these assignments. Since this worked until recently, I designed my classes with a ton of these assignments using quick learning checks so I have many grade book boxes needing attention.
I have the same question. Please bring back set default grade function.
Hi There, I just checked and I see the option to set a default grade. See screenshot. If you see something different, please reply with a screenshot.
We can see the "Set Default Grade" option in the list, but it will not update the ungraded assignments. Repeatedly getting "0 student scores updated."
I recommend checking your settings (found under the gear on the grades tab.) If you have any deductions setup for late work the grades may not update. Also, if you have already tried to "set default grade" even if it didn't work, you Canvas will not let you do it again unless you choose to "overwrite existing grades."
There are no deductions, no. And the default grade feature does nothing so re-doing it, agreed, accomplishes the same result.
Overwriting existing grades is not helpful because, for example, I like to use the 'essay' feature for minute papers during class. Previously, Canvas could auto grade to offer credit for any response or I could go through speedgrader, check quickly for engaged attempts, give no credit to the unserious ones, and then use default grade to give points to everyone else. Now I have to waste huge amounts of time with the bad UI clicking through each person's submission.
The button is there. It just doesn't work any longer for text-based entries (essays). If I'm using the 'essay' survey response to do a minute paper, say, where everyone should get credit, the default grade doesn't do anything. It makes me go through and give credit to every student, which is a huge waste of time clicking around when I just want to (and used to) scan responses for understanding so I can update my lessons accordingly.
The default grade does not work any longer for me either. It worked for years up through last semester. Canvas said perhaps it was due to multiple roles so my support team changed that but it still does not work. Very frustrating to have to enter grades one by one in 4 courses for each week. Please help!
same.. its GONE..
i have assignments which are LOW level observation type assessments
others were I check students in class and then enter a default grade for all..
why would this be removed?
