Future of Portfolium and ePortfolios

Dear Instructure Support Team,

I hope this message finds you well.

I’m writing to seek clarification regarding the future of Canvas Student ePortfolios (also known as Portfolium or Folio). I’ve come across information from Framingham State University stating that this tool will no longer be available after June 30, 2026 [1]. However, I haven’t been able to locate any official statement from Instructure confirming this.

Could you please confirm whether Instructure plans to deprecate Canvas Student ePortfolios (Portfolium), and if so, what the timeline and transition plan might be? Additionally, I’d appreciate any clarification on the status of the legacy ePortfolio tool in Canvas, and whether Portfolium is intended to fully replace it across all institutions. I’ve also seen a similar reference to deprecation on Rutgers University’s website [2].

If both tools are scheduled for retirement, could you share any information on Instructure’s future plans to support ePortfolios as a learning and assessment activity?

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

James (posting via Karsten’s account with his permission)

Hello @KarstenSommer

Thanks for posting in the Community!

Apologies for any delay in reply, as we have been working on communication regarding the sunsetting of the Canvas Student ePortfolios product.

Here is a detailed overview of this transition from our Chief Product Officer, Shiren Vijiasingam:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m reaching out to share an update on Portfolium products.

We’ve learned a lot over the last few years. After numerous acquisitions, product explorations, and customer conversations, we’ve heard loud and clear that customers expect our products to work together to support your goals, and that having too many disconnected offerings negatively impacts the user experience. Core learning workflows, using portfolios as a way to demonstrate learning or even a requirement to complete a course or a credential, and providing recognition of learning through badges or transcripts are critical, linked use cases that have been disjointed, and our aim is to fix that.

To unify our product offerings and deepen the connection between learning, demonstration of learning, and recognition of learning, the products formerly known as Portfolium will no longer be supported after June 30, 2026. These include Canvas Student ePortfolios, Canvas Folio Management, Canvas Student Pathways, and Canvas Program/Outcomes Assessment. Going forward, the functionality of these products will be available in other products, with an eye toward integration.

So here are the details of what’s happening with each of these products:

  • Portfolios are now natively supported in Canvas, as we’ve enhanced it to support the connection between learning and demonstration of learning. We are prioritizing building portfolio functionality where learning happens—in the LMS—with no extra cost to Canvas LMS customers and learners. With the new portfolio functionality coming to Canvas LMS this Q3, institutions will be able to assign portfolios to track skill development across courses and learners can also create their own portfolios to showcase progress and achievements while enrolled. Full access to portfolios ends when learners leave the institution, but they will be able export their content prior to graduation for personal records. This means there will no longer be a free, standalone Canvas Student ePortfolios product starting June 30, 2026. Free users will be notified before the end of 2025 in order to give them plenty of time to export their portfolios.

  • Canvas Student Pathways will be replaced by enhanced pathways functionality within our credentialing solution, Canvas Credentials.
Canvas Credentials is a robust credentialing solution, and is deeply integrated with the portfolio functionality within Canvas LMS, enabling organizations to create learning pathways that connect courses, assignments, portfolio evidence, and credentials. Enhanced pathways functionality will be built into Canvas Credentials over the course of the next several quarters, so we recommend that our customers with Canvas Student Pathways implement Canvas Credentials before Canvas Student Pathways’ sunset date of June 30, 2026. Many of you already have Canvas Credentials, in which case this will streamline the number of products you need! If you don’t have Canvas Credentials, connect with your CSM to discuss options for bringing it to your institution during this transition period.

  • Canvas Outcomes Assessment functionality is best supported by our partner, eLumen, in North America and APAC.
We will not be maintaining a standalone outcomes/program assessment solution for now. Instead, we are steering customers to our partner, eLumen. Insights by eLumen seamlessly integrates with Canvas and extends the power of the LMS to support comprehensive assessment, with clear visibility into quality processes and student achievement. Because it all works within Canvas, there is no new platform for faculty to learn. Instructure has partnered with eLumen for over two years to support program review and accreditation for customers in North America and APAC. If you're in these regions, your Instructure team would be happy to facilitate a demo and purchase.

Thank you for your patience in this journey, as I recognize that you’ve been eager to get an update specific to Portfolium for some time. Our intention with this note is to provide you with a clear, definitive update on what is happening with these products and how we’ll be approaching these use cases going forward, so you can confidently plan for how your students will showcase their academic achievements. We are excited to partner with you and support you as we build even better and more unified experiences for teaching, learning, and credentialing.

Please reach out to your CSM with any questions you may have.

    Warm regards,

    Shiren Vijiasingam
