Communication in Canvas

I love all of the different ways of communicating within Canvas.

I'd love to know which ones are your favourites and why.

My favorite are... Message students who, context cards, Arc, Speedgrader, and now I realized my definition of communicate is a little broad. 😉

Context cards? What are these?

A wonderful and very helpful way to quickly see how each student is doing in the class and then message them! All in one place and without going to the Inbox!

Asking your Communication question was well worth it just to learn about Context Cards! There are elements of several feature ideas included in the Context Card, and I have found them one of the best new features in a long time. I use them frequently both as a teacher  and as an admin.

Here are my favorites:

• Message students who................
• SpeedGrader.........
• Context cards........
• Discussions..............

I am suspecting that ARC would quickly become a favorite, if we could afford it.

Found the Context Cards! Thanks  @kona . Brilliant! Now I want to re-record our communication session. Rats.

Arc is a bit beyond us at the moment also.

But I do love the many ways Canvas offers for communication. Not to mention the cool tools we can embed.

 @Bobby2 , if you haven’t priced Arc you might want to. We were pleasantly surprised by how cost effective it was.

I am working with teachers in my district to utilize Canvas. Since we are not a 1:1 district,  I am working on showing them how it can be successful for blended learning. I would love to collaborate with you and share ideas. It seems you are ahead of the game compared to us!

Hi  @colleen_bergin1  and  @Bobby2 

Student Context Cards are still a beta feature, and your school's Canvas Admin will need to request that their CSM turn it on, then  your admin will need to enable it for your school.

We have been using it so long, that I had to check to see if it was still in beta. Once no longer considered a beta feature by Canvas, it will be available in all accounts; although it still my require your admins to turn it on.

Speaking of context cards, one reason I never turned them on for our K12 district is because they originally did not having grading based on grading periods.  It was 'all grading periods' and the data about missed assignments did not reset upon a new grading period.       The thing about missed assignments, if I'm in Q3, the number of missed assignments from Q1 and Q2 is irrelevant to a parent, teacher, or counselor.  They are focused on the current quarter.  Does anyone know if that has changed?

 @joseph_allen , I'm not sure. You might need to check with your Canvas CSM to see if they know if this has been updated.
